You don’t need us to tell you what gifts to buy for your friends and family. But we all need a little inspiration occasionally and you may get an idea from the following examples of when, why and what vintage original film poster might fit the bill for a gift occasion.

Or you can always just choose someone’s favourite film, actor or genre or perhaps even an appropriate tagline or title!

Anniversary

Perhaps the first film you saw together at the cinema? Or maybe an appropriate title like “It Started in Naples” or “An Affair to Remember”.

Birthday

For a ‘milestone’ birthday, think about a poster from a film made the year they were born.

Christening

An imaginative alternative to the usual gifts. The year’s big Disney or Pixar release, perhaps?

Christmas

A perfect gift. Or even some seasonal decoration, such as “White Christmas” or “It’s a Wonderful Life”.

Valentine's Day

How about “Dream Wife” or “Roman Holiday”? Or for those with a sense of humour what about “Carry On Loving”, “Casanova’s Big Night”, or even “How to Murder Your Wife”?

Wedding

A thoughtful way to thank the best man or chief bridesmaid, or an original gift for the happy couple themselves.

Or you could choose something to suit their office or work environment rather than their home – from “Anatomy of a Murder” for a criminal lawyer or “A Pair of Briefs” for a barrister to “Confessions of a Taxi Driver” for a minicab office.

The opportunities are almost endless. Congratulations. Father’s Day. Mother’s Day. Retirement. Thank you. Or no special reason at all.

Other Things to Consider

Shapes and Sizes

Shapes and Sizes

One Sheet and larger posters have a fantastic impact when framed, but there are times when something smaller is more appropriate.

Not everyone has the space for larger pieces, and sometimes not everyone in the household shares the same enthusiasm for movie posters (although we think they should!).

For these instances, a Lobby Card, or other smaller format, such as an Italian locandina or fotobusta, may be a better choice.

Budget

Budget

Original movie artwork isn’t cheap, but there are ways to spend less. Think about less well known films that might contain a special message or meaning to the gift recipient. Look at Lobby Cards rather than posters – it does depend on the title, but often these will be less expensive than the full size poster. Or have some fun and try to predict the market – use your own judgement to select a title which may not yet be in vogue, but which you think will be one day in the future.
