Sources differ on the exact date, but this is, or is very nearly, the 100th anniversary of the birth of Robert Mitchum. Criminally under-appreciated as an actor, and not as celebrated as he should be as one of the original icons of cool, let's hope that this anniversary leads to a revival of interest in his career. It encompassed the early Westerns, through the RKO years with plenty of noir classics on the way, included a later weary take on Chandler's Marlowe, and saw him popping up where you'd least expect him, in lighter fare such as Scrooged.
