Vertigo Topples Citizen Kane
4th August, 2012
After 50 years, the critics participating in the ten yearly poll by Sight and Sound have found a new greatest movie of all time. After five decades in which Welles' Citizen Kane was repeatedly voted the best, the new poll has Alfred Hitchcock's Vertigo on top. At the same time, the BFI is running a major retrospective, and Hitchcock is back in vogue. Unsurprisingly, this is reflected in the collectability of original posters and lobby cards for his movies. At the beginning of the Millenium, his and their popularity seemd to wane a little. But that has changed recently, and original pieces are now much harder to find for the classics, and command premium prices. At the same time, his career was long enough that there are still plenty of original items available, and there are some very nice and affordable pieces for some of his less popular films in particular.
